Weim.  Gray Ghost.  Velcro Dog.  The Dog That Thinks It’s Human.

Whatever you call them, there’s no denying that weimaraners are a special type of dog. All of us at Heartland Weimaraner Rescue would say that to know a weimaraner (or two) is to love them. They are beautiful and athletic, affectionate and energetic with an abundance of personality. Because of the strong bonds a weimaraner forms with its owner, many of our volunteers and adopters are weimaraners-for-life people. Once you have a weim in your life, you can’t live without them.

Heartland Weimaraner Rescue will host the 9th annual Ghost Runners 5k Dog Run on October 28th at Lake Hefner – Stars and Stripes Park in Oklahoma City. This event has come to be a beloved tradition by animal lovers and 5k runners both near and far. As HWR’s biggest fundraiser of the year, the Ghost Runners 5k Dog Run helps us fulfill our mission to help these wonderful animals in life-saving and life-altering ways, thanks to our generous sponsors and participants.

All of the efforts of HWR are performed solely by volunteers – from foster families that are willing to care for a dog in need to the planning and organizing of this race. Every penny of your sponsorship will assist HWR to provide medical care, food, and other necessities to dogs in the care of the rescue.

Over the past four years, HWR has helped nearly 210 dogs, including 52 in 2016 alone. Two of those dogs have left a special mark on the HWR family. Buddy and Berkley were surrendered to a shelter in Texas – they were barely a year old, they were scared, and Berkley was in the late-term of her pregnancy. Two weeks after coming to HWR in April 2016, Berkley gave birth to eight puppies. Buddy, Berkley and the rambunctious litter of puppies were cared for by HWR volunteers. Yes, puppies are cute, but they are a lot of work! All of the puppies were adopted to loving families. Buddy and Berkley also found their forever homes and have come to be joyful, playful dogs. It is because of people like you that we were able to give them the care they needed to live healthy, full lives.

In the past, the race has drawn approximately 1,500 spectators, including the runners. It’s a great way to promote your business and contribute to the community. HWR is a licensed non-profit animal rescue group – any donation you make is tax-deductible. Please contact Keri if you have any questions at 405.227.8525 or We look forward to seeing you at this year’s event and hope that it is our biggest and best yet! Thank you for supporting our program – we truly could not do this without you.

Parking & Race Route

About the Course

The Ghost Runners 5k Dog Run is run on a flat, fast, USATF certified course.  Production, timing, and event services will be provided by Ultramax Sports using MyLaps bib tag timing technology.  The timing tag is on the back of the bib and disposable.  Simply wear your bib number on the front & center of your outermost layer of clothing, with the safety pins provided, and you can keep it when you've finished the race!

Water Stations

Water will be provided throughout the course and at start and finish areas.  Remember, heat kills and water saves!  Past Ghost Runners Races have proven it can be hot and humid.  Please drink plenty of water before, during, and after the race.  And don't forget about your furry loved one!!  We will be supplying pet pools for cooling your pet down along with water bowls throughout the course as well.

Medical Stations

We will have a triage veterinarian and nurse from Animal Emergency Center in our booth area.  There will also be golf carts traveling the course to transport any injured animals/persons to the triage areas if the need should arise.  Human triage provided by Local Police and Emergency Medical Services.
